Crown lengthening is a dental procedure used to improve gum health or prepare the mouth for restorative or cosmetic treatments. It can also correct a “gummy” smile, where excessive gum tissue covers the teeth. By reshaping or recontouring bone and gum tissue, crown lengthening exposes more of the natural tooth. This procedure can be performed on a single tooth, multiple teeth, or the entire gum line to achieve a balanced and aesthetically pleasing smile.
Request an AppointmentReasons for Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is versatile and offers numerous benefits. Common reasons for this procedure include:
- Restoration of damaged teeth: Helps prepare broken or decayed teeth for new restorations.
- Cosmetic improvements: Removes excess gum tissue to create a more balanced smile and reduce susceptibility to periodontal infections.
- Dental crown placement: Creates space between the supporting bone and crown, preventing damage to gums or bone when the crown is in place.
What to Expect During Crown Lengthening
The procedure is typically performed under local anesthetic. The duration depends on how many teeth are treated and whether any bone removal is necessary. Existing crowns will be removed and replaced as needed.
Your dentist will make small incisions to separate the gums from the teeth, providing access to the roots and underlying bone. In some cases, only soft tissue removal is necessary; in others, a small amount of bone is also removed using hand or rotary instruments.
The teeth will appear longer immediately after surgery due to gum repositioning. A periodontal bandage will be placed to protect the site, and medications or antimicrobial rinses may be prescribed to prevent infection. Full healing typically occurs within two to three months.
