An inlay restoration is a custom-made filling crafted from composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain. Porcelain inlays are especially popular because they closely resemble natural teeth. They are created by a professional dental laboratory and permanently cemented into the tooth by your dentist.

Inlays are used to conservatively repair teeth with large defective fillings or damage caused by decay or trauma. They are an ideal alternative to conventional silver or composite fillings and are more conservative than crowns, as less tooth structure is removed during preparation.

Like most dental restorations, inlays are not permanent and may eventually need replacement. They are highly durable and can last many years, providing a long-lasting, beautiful smile.

Reasons for Inlay Restorations

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large existing fillings

What Getting an Inlay Involves

Inlay procedures usually require two appointments. During the first appointment, accurate impressions (molds) of your teeth are taken to create the custom inlay and a temporary restoration.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist removes decay and/or old filling materials. The space is cleaned and prepared to fit the inlay precisely. A temporary filling protects the tooth while the inlay is fabricated in the dental laboratory.

At the second appointment, the new inlay is carefully cemented into place. Minor adjustments may be made to ensure proper fit and a comfortable bite.

After treatment, you will receive care instructions. Good oral hygiene, a proper diet, and regular dental visits will help maintain the longevity of your inlay.
