How the Opalescence® Treatment is Performed
Opalescence® gel contains 38% hydrogen peroxide and potassium nitrate. After in-office treatment, lower concentration gel and toothpaste may be prescribed for home use. The gel is thick to reduce mess during application.
- A thorough cleaning removes debris from the teeth.
- Photographs are taken to record current tooth color.
- A cheek retractor exposes key tooth surfaces.
- Resin is painted on the gums for protection.
- The first layer of Opalescence® gel is applied for 15 minutes.
- The gel is suctioned off and whitening progress is checked.
- Additional gel is applied for another 15 minutes and removed.
- The mouth is rinsed, and a final layer of gel is applied.
- Post-treatment photographs are taken to record results.
- If chosen, a specialized light may be used for about 30 seconds per gel application.
The entire procedure, including cleaning, typically takes no more than 90 minutes.
