A crown, also known as a cap, fully encases a tooth to restore its original shape, size, and function. Crowns protect and strengthen teeth that cannot be restored with fillings or other restorations.
Request an AppointmentTypes of Crowns
Porcelain crowns are the most popular type of crown because they are tooth-colored, highly durable, and provide a natural appearance. Crowns are custom-made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth, giving you a long-lasting, beautiful smile. Like all restorations, crowns may eventually need replacement.
Reasons for Crowns
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Cosmetic enhancement
- Decayed teeth
- Fractured fillings
- Large fillings
- Teeth that have had a root canal
What to Expect During Crown Placement
A crown procedure usually requires two appointments:
- First Appointment: Several precise molds (impressions) are taken to create a custom crown. A temporary crown is made to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is fabricated. The tooth is prepared by removing decay and shaping it to fit the crown. The temporary crown is placed and your bite is checked.
- Second Appointment: The temporary crown is removed, the tooth is cleaned, and the permanent crown is carefully placed to ensure proper fit, spacing, and bite.
Aftercare
Follow the care instructions provided by your dentist and maintain regular dental visits to ensure the longevity and health of your new crown.
