A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance that replaces missing teeth. Bridges restore both function and aesthetics, helping maintain a healthy, complete smile.
Request an AppointmentTypes of Bridges
There are several types of dental bridges. Your dentist will help determine the best option for your situation. The most common type is the traditional bridge, usually made of porcelain fused to metal. This bridge consists of two crowns over the anchoring teeth (abutments) and pontics (artificial teeth) filling the gap created by missing teeth.
Reasons for a Fixed Bridge
- Fill the space of missing teeth
- Maintain facial shape
- Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
- Restore chewing and speaking ability
- Restore your smile
- Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance
What to Expect During the Bridge Process
- Preparation: The anchoring teeth are numbed and a portion of enamel is removed to fit crowns.
- Impression: A highly accurate mold is taken and sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate the bridge.
- Temporary Bridge: A temporary bridge is placed and worn for several weeks until the permanent bridge is ready.
- Permanent Placement: The permanent bridge is checked, adjusted, and cemented for proper fit. Sometimes temporary cement is used first to allow your teeth and tissues to adjust.
Aftercare
Proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits are essential to maintain the longevity of your bridge. Occasional replacement or re-cementing may be necessary due to normal wear.
