Panoramic X-rays (also known as Panorex® or orthopantomograms) are wraparound images of the face and teeth, providing a view that is otherwise invisible to the naked eye. X-rays in general reveal hidden structures such as wisdom teeth, early signs of cavities, fractures, and bone loss.

Panoramic X-rays are extraoral and simple to perform. Unlike traditional dental X-rays, where the film is placed inside the mouth, panoramic film is contained in a mechanism that rotates around the outside of the head.
Panoramic X-rays are generally taken on an as-needed basis, rather than routinely like bitewing X-rays. They provide a broad view of the sinus areas, nasal regions, and mandibular nerve rather than a detailed view of each tooth. They are especially useful for patients experiencing extreme pain or when sinus problems are suspected to affect dental health.
Uses of Panoramic X-Rays
- Assess patients with an extreme gag reflex
- Evaluate the progression of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders
- Detect cysts and abnormalities
- Reveal impacted teeth
- Identify jawbone fractures
- Plan treatment for full/partial dentures, braces, and implants
- Detect gum disease and cavities
How Panoramic X-Rays Are Taken
Panoramic X-rays provide a two-dimensional, ear-to-ear view of the upper and lower jaw. They are commonly used to assess wisdom teeth positioning and to evaluate whether dental implants may affect the mandibular nerve.
The Panorex equipment consists of a rotating arm holding the X-ray generator and a moving film attachment. The patient’s head is positioned between these devices while the generator rotates around the head, capturing orthogonal images. Proper head and body positioning ensures sharp, clear images. The pictures are magnified up to 30% to highlight even the smallest details.
Panoramic X-rays are a valuable diagnostic and treatment-planning tool. They are safer than other types of X-rays, as less radiation enters the body.
