Root canal therapy is required when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. To save the tooth, the pulp (living tissue inside the tooth), nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed. The resulting space is filled with medicated dental materials to restore the tooth’s full function.
Request an AppointmentRoot canal therapy is the preferred treatment to save a tooth that would otherwise die and need extraction. While some patients believe pulling the tooth is the solution, extraction is often more costly and can create problems for adjacent teeth. Root canal treatment is highly successful and usually lasts a lifetime, though retreatment may be needed in rare cases due to new infections.
Signs and Symptoms Indicating Root Canal Therapy
- An abscess or pimple on the gums
- Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks
- Severe toothache
- Sometimes no symptoms at all
- Swelling or tenderness around the affected tooth
Reasons for Root Canal Therapy
- Decay reaching the tooth pulp
- Infection or abscess in the tooth or at the root tip
- Injury or trauma to the tooth
What to Expect During Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy can require one or more appointments and may be performed by a dentist or an endodontist (root canal specialist).
- The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia.
- A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva.
- An access opening is created on top of the tooth.
- Special root canal files are used to remove the pulp, nerve tissue, bacteria, and any decay.
- The tooth is thoroughly cleaned and temporarily or permanently filled.
- At the next appointment, the roots and cavity are sealed with dental materials, and a filling covers the access opening.
- A crown (cap) is placed on the tooth to protect it, prevent fractures, and restore full function.
After treatment, some sensitivity is normal but will subside as the tooth heals. You will receive care instructions after each appointment. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular dental visits will help ensure the long-term success of your root canal therapy.
