If you are experiencing severe tooth sensitivity or advanced periodontal disease, a tooth extraction may be necessary. A simple extraction allows the dentist to safely remove the affected tooth without major surgery.
Request an AppointmentReasons for a Simple Extraction
Simple extractions can alleviate pain or prepare you for cosmetic or restorative dental procedures. Common reasons include:
- Advanced periodontal disease that has loosened tooth roots
- Extra teeth or retained baby teeth that impede adult teeth
- Preparation for orthodontic treatment
- Removal of fractured or malformed teeth
- Severe tooth decay that cannot be treated with root canal therapy
How a Tooth Extraction is Performed
The procedure begins with X-rays of the affected tooth or teeth to guide treatment. A local anesthetic is administered to ensure a pain-free experience. The dentist then uses an elevator tool to lift the tooth and loosen the ligaments and surrounding gum tissue. Forceps are used to gently rock the tooth back and forth until it is released from the socket. In some cases, a stubborn tooth may need to be broken into smaller pieces for removal.
After the tooth is extracted, gauze is placed in the socket, and you will bite down to control bleeding. Stitches may be used if needed to close the socket.
