Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel, enhancing the beauty of your smile.

Because having whiter teeth is a top aesthetic concern for many patients, there are several whitening options. The most popular method is a home teeth whitening system that can dramatically brighten teeth. Whitening only works on natural enamel, so any old fillings, crowns, or restorations should be evaluated and replaced after bleaching to match the newly whitened teeth.

Teeth whitening is not permanent. Touch-ups may be needed every few years, and more often if you smoke or consume coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for Teeth Whitening

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoride during tooth development)
  • Normal wear of the outer tooth layer
  • Stains from medications (e.g., tetracycline)
  • Yellow or brown discoloration of teeth

What Teeth Whitening Involves

This process usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) of your teeth are made to fabricate custom, clear plastic trays.

At the second appointment, the trays are tried on for fit and adjusted if necessary. The trays are worn with a special whitening solution, either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks, depending on the degree of staining and desired results. Tooth sensitivity during whitening is normal and usually subsides after treatment.

You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays and are encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to maintain a healthy, bright smile.
